What supplies does a dog need?

April 24, 2023
What supplies does a dog need?

Aspiring dog owners often wonder if they need to buy a variety of pricey items to properly care for their new furry friend. However, this isn't always necessary, and some may find that a long list of products isn't required to provide adequate care for their pet.

Here are some essential equipment you need for your dog or puppy:

Dog Lead

When selecting a lead for your puppy or dog, ensure it is appropriate for their size and breed. Avoid leads that are too long, short or heavy.

Different types of leads:

  • Nylon Leads
  • Retractable Leads
  • Vegan Leather Leads
  • Leather Leads
  • Rope Leads

Dog Poo Bags

When taking your puppy for a walk, you should always carry a supply of poo bags, sandwich bags or nappy sacks. An effective way to ensure you don't forget your bags is to attach a poo bag holder to your lead.

Dog Collar

Selecting the right collar for your puppy or dog: When it comes to choosing a collar for your furry friend, it's important to find one that is comfortable and appropriate for their breed, size, and age. To ensure your puppy's or dog's safety, avoid collars that are too loose and can slip over their head, or ones that are too tight and do not allow enough room to fit two fingers underneath.

Dog Harness

When it comes to walking dogs, dog harnesses are often the preferred option as they do not put any pressure on the neck. However, collars are generally more comfortable and provide a place to hold an ID tag. It's important to note that if you have a dog that is prone to breathing issues, such as a pug, it's best to use a harness instead of a collar.

Dog ID Tag

According to The Control of Dogs Order 1992, it is mandatory for dog owners to inscribe their name and address on their pet's collar tag. Even if your dog has a microchip, you must still comply with this law. Failure to do so can result in a fine of up to £5,000. While it is not necessary to include your dog's name, you may choose to add your telephone numbers on the tag for additional contact information.

Dog Bowl

To ensure your dog's health and comfort, keep these tips in mind:

  • Use separate bowls for food and water, and make sure they have a non-slip bottom.
  • For tall dogs, it's best to raise the bowls off the ground.
  • Always provide fresh water for your dog.

Dog Bed

Dog beds are available in various shapes and sizes, and every dog has their individual preferences. It's always best to provide them with multiple options to ensure comfort. With a few choices, you'll be sure to find one that they'll love.

Dog Clothing

If you have a short-coated or recently clipped pooch, they may feel the cold more acutely than their furry friends. Consider fitting them with a snug jumper or coat for walks in chilly weather. Long-haired dogs may also benefit from protective clothing to help them stay clean and dry. Ensure that the clothing is well-fitted and comfortable for your pup.

Dog Crate or Travel Bag

If you're ordering a crate for your puppy, make sure it's big enough for them to stretch out and stand up in once they're fully grown. It's also important to check that the mesh is not too big, as it can cause puppies to get their mouths stuck. Once you have a suitable crate, add some bedding inside and tie some toys near the far end so they have to go inside to play. Lastly, softly place your puppy in the crate when they're asleep to get them accustomed to it.

If you're a dog owner, a dog carrier is a valuable addition to your dog supplies, whether you're globetrotting with your furry friend or simply taking him to the vet. It will ensure his safety while traveling in the car and make it possible for you to bring him on flights.

Dog Grooming Supplies & Nail Clippers

Proper grooming is essential to maintain your puppy's hygiene and health. Take the following steps to make sure your pup looks and feels their best:

  • Gently brush your puppy with a dog brush, introducing the concept of grooming in short sessions.

  • If your puppy bites the brush, use taste deterrents to discourage this behaviour.

  • Check your dog's nails regularly and trim them if they get too long, especially dew-claws which do not get worn down naturally and may grow into the flesh.

  • You can choose to learn to trim your puppy's nails yourself with a dog nail clipper or have a professional do it for you.
